Parliament of Death

June 2025 will go down as a particularly dark month in the UK’s history, even by our already bleak standards. In the space of a week our parliament has voted to effectively decriminalise abortion up to birth and to allow “assisted dying”.

Decriminalisation, we were told, is to protect women from prosecution. In fact, it allows women to be coerced into abortions right up to birth, allows unscrupulous abortion providers to use whatever methods they wish and provide abortion medications with virtually no checks whatsoever, knowing that it is going to be nigh on impossible to prosecute them under the new law, if it comes in.

“Assisted Dying” is another euphemism. MPs not only voted to pass this bill but also voted for a version of it in which almost every safeguard that was proposed to protect the vulnerable has been removed. Instead of investing in proper pain relief and end of life care, Government funding could now be focussed on “helping” people to die. Euthanasia is already widely practised in our hospitals. How long before the “right” to die becomes a duty to die?

In response to these votes, the Bishop responsible for Family & Life Issues said: “This is not the end of the parliamentary process, and we should not lose hope. We ask the Catholic community to continue to pray for members of parliament whilst they consider this legislation and to pray that government will act to promote and protect life from conception until natural death.” – Bishop John Sherrington.

With your continued prayers and financial support – however dark things get - we can ensure that women like these are able to turn away from abortion because we can offer them real alternatives.

Supporting Mothers and babies in these dark times

These days are becoming very dark times. When I heard about the vote to decriminalise abortion, which will result in more, later term abortions, as well as vulnerable women being coerced into abortion after the current six-month time limit and then I heard that Parliament voted to legalize euthanasia, I had to acknowledge things are very dark indeed.

To try and paint any of these decisions, as anything other than evil would be dishonest. Euthanasia which initially will be presented as being available just to help those who really want to end their own lives, will of course be broadened instantly. Looking at any of the countries around the world where euthanasia has been legalized, we can see that most or all ‘safeguards’ are quickly removed and it is the extremely vulnerable who are put to death against their wishes.

Over the years we've seen many women who managed to hide their pregnancy until they were six months pregnant and had thus passed the legal limit for abortion. These were women who feared being pushed into an abortion by those around them. By 6 months of pregnancy, it was too late for anyone to pressure them to abort. Parliament has just voted to ensure that these women no longer have even that much protection in law.

But in the midst of all this darkness there is still light. At our legal, prayerful pro-life vigils near abortion centres around London, and at others around the country, women still reach out to us for the support they need. We even have women approach our vigils with a certain amount of trepidation, after hearing the lies and fantasies spread by our enemies to distort the work we really do. In spite of the buffer zones that keep us away from helping some of the women approaching the abortion centres, we are still today reaching and helping many expectant Mothers.

We are also privileged to have Mothers that we have helped in the past send their friends  -who are strongly thinking of abortion - to us for help to keep their babies. These women  are often set on abortion because they do not believe that the help they need to continue their pregnancy is really available to them. The reason that our old “clients” send their friends to us is because they know from experience that we can and will help them. Just a couple of weeks ago, a twenty-week pregnant woman, who was still considering abortion, was sent into our Centre by one of her friends. We had helped this friend six or seven years ago during her own pregnancy, and we had met her going into the abortion centre in Ealing. Ironically, the abortion centre in Ealing still has a plaque of Saint Michael on its wall, as it once was a Christian house of healing.

With your continued prayers and financial support – however dark things get - we can ensure that women like these are able to turn away from abortion because we can offer them real alternatives.

Religious Believer's More Likely To Recognise Sanctity of Life

Since I have been involved in counselling women who are planning an abortion, I have become more and more aware that a woman with a religious belief is far more likely, ultimately, to keep her baby than an atheist in the same situation.

I meet many people, including many pro-lifers and many Catholics who swear this is not so. But statistically all the evidence suggests it really is.

OK, we all know a really good atheist, and we can look at their high standards and moral values and feel that being pro-life is not a religious issue.

Likewise we all know Christians, and other believers, ourselves included, who constantly fall short of the mark in our beliefs and our behaviour, in little ways and in big ways.

We may know many religious people who have had abortions for example.

But nevertheless, there is a vast difference in talking to a woman who is planning an abortion if she believes in God and talking to her if she doesn't. And their is a vast difference between a nominal "believer" and someone who really believes in God with their heart and soul.

Simply put, the believer sees the unborn child as a child of God, created for a purpose, and created to be her child. Furthermore, the believer sees the child as someone with an immortal soul, who will not 'end' when the abortion happens, but who they may one day meet again face to face. Lastly, the believer knows that one day they will face God and have to account for this deed. They, therefore, have much more than the 'here and now' to consider in aborting this baby.

The atheist may respect life and want to spare the child the physical pain of abortion. But where there are real difficulties involved in having the baby, if they can be assured that their baby will not feel pain (a lie women are often told when aborting) they can consider the worldly sufferings the child could endure if born to be their paramount concern.

Despite this, it is true that sometimes the Christian woman, for example, may abort, and the atheist may keep her baby. But this does not disprove the general rule that the believer can more readily recognise the incalculable worth of the soul created by God and then, therefore, treat it with the respect due, where the atheist often cannot.
Therefore it came as no surprise to read Thursday's Guardian article: "Atheist Doctors 'more likely to hasten death' ". The article goes on to say;
Doctors who are atheist or agnostic are twice as likely to take decisions that might shorten the life of somebody who is terminally ill as doctors who are deeply religious – and doctors with strong religious convictions are less likely even to discuss such decisions with the patient, according to Professor Clive Seale, from the centre for health sciences at Barts and the London school of medicine and dentistry.

After all, how could an atheist be expected to appreciate that God has numbered our days, and permits us the grace of exactly the right number of days, and exactly the right amount of suffering for us to be able to work out our own salvation?

Apologies to good-hearted atheists who do respect life. But in my experience, the odds are stacked against them doing so.

Sunday 25th July Day for Life

This Sunday is the Day for Life appointed by the Bishops for 2010. It is also the 42nd Anniversary of the Papal Encyclical "Humanae Vitae", which restated the Church's teaching on the sanctity of human life from conception and the prohibition on the use of contraception.
Please remember to pray for the end of abortion and euthanasia and all attacks on life on this day and for people to learn about and find the grace to accept the Church's teachings on contraception.
Life is Sacred from conception
until natural death
