Should We Bother to Pray Near Abortion Centres?

You might well wonder what is the point of attending a prayer vigil outside an abortion centre, especially since the buffer zone law came in a year ago. What purpose does it serve to stand 150 metres away from the centre? You’ll see so many people walking past and so few actually going into the centre. Would those attending the vigil receive a lot of abuse? These were all my thoughts as a new intern before attending my first vigil.

To answer my first question, yes, most of the people passing by are not heading to the abortion centre but it is 100% worth being there even though you may never know what good you have done. Attending a vigil really makes you realize the power of prayer as you can never change hearts without it. I admit it can be hard standing on the pavement in the pouring rain and everyone refuses the leaflets you try to offer but you never know what’s going on behind the scenes, it could be that a woman sees the sign we display at the vigil and realises someone cares for her and her baby and she might never turn up to that abortion appointment. It could even be that the leaflet that someone grabbed off you and threw on the ground further down the street might get into the right hands and help a mother in need! God has a plan with everything.

To talk about the abuse received, I find it is not nearly as bad as I expected, generally passersby just walk past and pay no attention. However there are always a few exceptions to this, a few people will hurl insults as they stride past. I find it helpful to remember in these cases that there is no knowing what this person has gone through in their life, many of these people have probably been directly affected by the horrors of abortion and they take their anger out on those of us who oppose it.

Having Your Baby Scanned Can Help Us Save Lives!

Now London based women who are between 5 and 13 weeks of pregnancy can help to save lives by having a dating scan at Good Counsel's Pregnancy Centre to help us train our Ultrasonographers. We urgently need women at this stage of pregnancy to act as scan "models" for our trainees.

Ultrasound Scans are one of those mixed blessings. Routinely used to detect and exterminate those whom society deems "imperfect", the flipside of ultrasound is that crisis pregnancy centres report that as many as 90% of abortion-minded women change their mind after seeing a scan of their baby.

The Good Counsel Network is seeking to redress the balance here in London - where scan technology is so often used against life - by offering a scan to all abortion-minded women we see. In order to get this service up and running, we are training some volunteers to do the scans.

Some of our mums who are keeping their babies are already participating by volunteering to be scanned but we need many more.

All participants will get to see their baby on the free scan, will get a free picture of their baby and their travel expenses will be refunded. You will only be asked to have one scan.

All scans will be supervised by a Consultant who is an expert in Ultrasound.

If you would like to have a scan and help save lives at the same time, call us as soon as possible on 02077231740 to book in.

Help To Save One More Life in Whatever Way You Can

There is a piece in the film 'Schindler's List' where Oscar Schindler is leaving the factory which he owned with his wife. As he leaves he sheds tears over the number of jews that he could have saved for the cost of the few possessions that he still had. The factory he ran during World War II used large amounts of conscript jewish labour. He did whatever he could to rescue as many of the jews as he could.

We are all in a similar situation today, over 700 babies will be aborted in England and Wales today. They are all there just waiting for us to save’them. Whether you spend an hour in Eucharistic Adoration or say an extra Rosary or Fast, (be it a Fast from some food or depriving yourself of something else the loss of which you would actually notice) or whether you spend time praying outside an Abortuary it all helps.

Volunteering in the Good Counsel centre in London is another obvious way to help, whether you can help with accounts, secretarial work, sorting baby clothes, attending Adoration in our Chapel or even just folding leaflets. All of these small tasks go to make up our life-saving work. Without Prayer our success rate would be diminished so if you cannot come to our office to not feel downhearted for you still are a vital cog in Our Lady's Pro-life machine.
